What is a WSP?

A Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) is a structured training plan that helps an employer identify skills needs and set out how staff development will be handled in the coming period. It is usually linked to an ATR (Annual Training Report), which records the training already completed.

In simple terms, the ATR looks backward, and the WSP looks forward. Together, they help the employer report training activity, plan future training, and structure workplace skills development in a more professional way.

Planning

The WSP helps a business identify what training staff actually need.

Reporting

The ATR helps the employer show what training has already been done.

Compliance

Proper WSP/ATR preparation supports skills development compliance and better planning.

Important timing: WSP/ATR submissions are normally due by 30 April each year. Missing the deadline can affect mandatory grant recovery and broader skills development compliance planning.

FAQs

Do all employers need the same level of WSP support?

No. The level of support usually depends on staff size, internal systems, training complexity, and how confident the employer is with the process.

Can I do WSP and ATR internally?

Yes. That’s exactly why the DIY Guide and Template Pack exist. They help internal staff structure the process more professionally.

What documents do I usually need?

Usually staff details, job titles, training records, training costs, organisational structure information, and planning inputs for future development needs.

Can WSP work support B-BBEE planning too?

Yes. Skills development planning and reporting often overlap with broader B-BBEE skills development strategy.

Are these prices fixed by law?

No. Service pricing is market-based. Consultant fees vary depending on company size, sector, headcount, and complexity.
